Returning to Europe in March 2010
Now that I’ve got my last international trip done for 2009, I can look forward to a good break over Christmas. Planning the next trip to Europe in March 2010 already beckons however.
At this point, I know I’ll be starting with keynoting the IntraTeam conference in Denmark on March 2-4, and then finishing in Utrecht on March 16 for a keynote at the huge Entopic conference. Beyond this, I’m already expecting to be doing things in England, France and Switzerland.
I already have a pile of invites from the last trip, for workshops, presentations, in-house sessions or consulting. It seems polite, however, to throw open a general invitation. Who would like me to do something in Europe in March 2010?
Catherine Grenfell on successful intranet managers
Jane McConnell has conducted a podcast interview with our very own Catherine Grenfell on successful intranet managers. To quote:
When dealing with the legacy of intranet initiatives that have failed, Catherine says: “You can’t undo the past; you can influence the future.”
Establishing communication channels and setting expectation when everyone wants everything requires good negotiation skills.
Unlike other managers in the organization, intranet managers deal with staff at all levels. They need to have an elevator pitch about the intranet.
Intranet managers need to learn to “let go” of content. They need to empower others.

Tridion, Forms, and Interaction
A press release was sent to me today with the title "SDL Tridion Puts Online Forms at the Heart of Interaction." Which made me smile, in a nostalgic sort of way.
Nowadays, when we discuss interaction, we tend to quickly drift off to social media, networking, or collaboration. How do you deal with those bidirectional (or rather, multidirectional) streams of interacting content? Is a Web CMS really suited for this, especially those (like Tridion) that emphasize "publishing to" a delivery tier (in other words, pushing out the content like a fire-and-forget thing)? It's not something you can reduce to "here's the form, so there's your interaction."
For sure, web forms are often more important (and more complex) than you'd think at first glance. However, the Tridion module doesn't actually process the form content, store it, or create a workflow around it. It just allows you to create the forms themselves, "to manipulate the form as if it were just another type of web content." Useful as that may be, it's quite different from actually managing the interaction.
So if web forms are at the heart of Tridion's interaction, as the company's marketing suggests, that's a bit like Kafka 2.0. At least now, you can send in really pretty forms. In triplicate.

Nstein Lends Sentiment Analysis to Reputation Measurement
Nstein (news, site) recently stepped up their relationship with evolve24, an analytics research firm in St. Louis. The collaboration gives evolve24 access to Nstein’s handy Sentiment Analysis module, allowing them to quickly determine an article’s overall tone for key insight into a company’s representation.
"Reputations are built over time and are the response to actions taken by a corporation,” explained Scot Wheeler, Vice President of Strategy & Client Services for evolve24. “For example, reputation can be hurt by unaddressed negative responses to products and services, including poor customer support, regulatory or legislative issues, insensitive ad campaigns, or any perceived affront to an audience, while a new product announcement, a viral campaign or launch of user groups may create highly positive coverage in influential publications and blogs which will help build reputation.”
Wheeler estimates that one person at peak performance can detect the tone of 25 articles per hour. Nstien’s technology will reportedly boost that number to tens of thousands of pieces of content per day and still require only one person to manually test and verify results.
“We are thrilled that evolve24 continues to expand its relationship with Nstein”, said Nstein CTO Jean-Michel Texier, “This collaboration allow us to deepen our knowledge of marketing decision support systems and accelerate the reinforcement of our technological offering in opinion mining and automated brand monitoring.”

Slidecast of the 2009 Intranet Innovation Award winners
Last week we held an awards ceremony at the KMWorld conference in San Jose. In addition, I gave a 50 minute presentation that shared plenty of detail on a number of the winners.
The slidecast above provides both the slides and associated audio. It’s a lot to sit through, but well worthwhile if you are interested in the state-of-the-art on intranets. (You can get all the detail in the associated Intranet Innovations 2009 report.)
Video marketing of the intranet
It’s not enough just to redevelop the intranet, it also needs to be relaunched. The challenge, like all marketing, is to reach the intended audience and capture their attention. While many intranet teams are too shy for their own good, a few are not afraid to do something interesting.
Thanks to the wonders of the internet, a few videos launching new intranet sites have come across my desk. The first is almost sexy:
The second is pretty funny:
NEO from Bevin Hernandez on Vimeo.
I think these are great, and show the power of video to engage and amuse. Certainly better than just a homepage news item!
Has anyone seen any other intranet-related videos they’d like to share?
CoreMedia Launches New Web CMS at IMS 2009
CoreMedia is set to show off the latest version of their web content management system at the IMS 2009 this week.
They call it a fully integrated platform that combines core content management, social networking, enterprise integration and multi-touchpoint delivery. The Web CMS vendor will demonstrate two-way integration with social networking sites like Facebook and talk about the next generation of content management.
In addition to demonstrating their latest CMS, CoreMedia’s Vice President Marketing, Rene Hermes, will also be talking about how customer engagement is becoming more challenging with the number of touchpoints available to reach and talk to customers. He will explain how a web content management system can be used to deliver web experiences that cross these touchpoints.
You can hear that talk on Wednesday, December 2 at 2:30 pm and also sit in on a few more including Modera, Telerik and TERMINALFOUR.
If you aren’t able to attend IMS 2009, you can learn read about Hermes views on multi-touchpoint on the CoreMedia blog.

A day on intranet design with Victorian councils
Last Friday I spent the day in Melbourne, running an Intranet Design + Redesign workshop for local councils. The in-house workshop was organised by one council, and with other councils invited to join the session. We ended up with about 24 people in the room representing 15 different councils from across the Melbourne metropolitan region and beyond.
This was a great group, and their energy made the day fly by. (It’s so much easier to run a workshop when everyone’s laughing and having fun!). It seems they enjoyed the day too:
“Great lightbulb moments! James is an engaging presenter who knows his ’stuff” — he has great stories, responds easily and fully to questions, imparts heaps of relevant information and keeps to time schedule too.”
“Thanks, lots of inspiration and focus.”
“Great! Really informative and now I can go back to work with tools to use straight away.”
“Changed my thinking alot about the role of the intranet and how we can improve it.”
“Really informative, engaging and useful.”
“Useful, interesting, engaging, well presented. Lots of useful tips and tricks.”
“Excellent. Well presented. Great use of visuals and slides.”
“Really interesting! It got me in the mindset to get working on my intranet and intranet strategy. One of the best trainers I have seen.”
“Excellent – knows his stuff, keeps it interesting, injects humour. Would recommend highly.”
This is the second time this year we’ve run a private workshop session in Melbourne, and the format works well. It’s extremely cost-effective for participants, and a great way for us to connect with a tightly-knit group of participants. Drop us a line if you’d like to organise something similar in your neighbourhood…
